2014 Sustain-a-Ball Honorees

Cali Burrito
Cali Burrito is an Allentown burrito and taco “joint” (their term) which uses local organic tofu and produce, transfat-free vegetable frying oil, organic coffee, and sugar-cane plates and utensils.  Shawn McHugh and Nick Sorrentino are the founders.       

Buy Fresh Buy Local 
The goal of the greater Lehigh Valley chapter of Buy Fresh, Buy Local is to make it easier to find, choose, and appreciate great local foods, while supporting the farmers and lands that produce them.  Lynn Prior is the chapter director.           

The Seed Farm  
   Located at the old Seem Seed Farm in Lower Macungie Township, The Seed Farm is a farmer-training and agricultural-business incubator program aimed at helping to start and maintain new, sustainable farms in the Lehigh Valley, which, in turn, help to facilitate the development of a vibrant, local food system.  The Seed Farm links new farmers with training, equipment, and land through its apprentice and stewardship programs, eliminating the top three barriers to farm entry and opening doors for a new generation of farmers in the Lehigh Valley. Jeff Moyer is president of its board, and Lindsey Parks is the executive director.

Urban Eco Fish
   “Sustainable fish production for a sustainable Allentown” is Urban Eco Fish’s motto, and their mission is to develop urban aquaculture in the city of Allentown that serves to maximize the sustainable aspects of fish production by: 1) creating opportunities for economic development in the city center; 2) being situated in close proximity to large numbers of multicultural consumers; 3) increasing opportunities to serve the “locavore” and “natural food” movements in local and regional restaurants; and 4) developing partnerships for educational opportunities and community outreach. Its founder is Rich Niesenbaum, the professor and chair of biology and director of sustainability studies at Muhlenberg College.

 GROW LEHIGH VALLEY 
Connecting food, thought, and action, Grow Lehigh Valley is a consortium of Sodexo culinary teams in the Lehigh Valley sourcing fresh, local, sustainable, and seasonal ingredients to serve Sodexo’s guests and partners at DeSales University, Lehigh University, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Northampton Community College, and Lehigh Valley Health Network. Sodexo works with local farmers to assure a consistent supply of locally produced food for its menus.

LEHIGH COUNTY COMMUNITY GARDENS PROGRAM The Lehigh County Community Gardens Program provides over 200 garden spaces to Lehigh County residents in support of the production of healthy food and to promote sustainable gardening practices.  Dora Gensemer directs this program.

Muhlenberg College Sustainability House (The Tree House)
The goal of the Muhlenberg College Tree House is to educate students and the local community in how to be environmentally responsible.  The Tree House is envisioned as a hub for sustainable living.  Kalyna Procyk is the contact for this project.
